Formoso Fire Station

The City of Formoso, located in Jewell County in north central Kansas, is constructing a new 80' by 70' fire station. The fire station has an estimated market value of $334,000 and will be subsidized through a $200,400 KAN STEP grant and volunteer participation. KAN STEP is an acronym for Kansas Small Town Environment Program that is funded through the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing. KAN STEP has successfully used "sweat equity" to help communities reduce costs of water system improvements and now, fire stations and community centers.

The Project Representative at Formoso is Steve Spiegel; the Grant Administrator is John Cyr of the North Central Kansas Planning Commission; the Architect is Donnie Marrs of DMA Architects; Steve Duryea and Shane Holthaus are the Technical Assistants responsible. The Kansas Rural Water Association provides Inspection Services and Assistance. The new fire station will have six truck bays, in-floor heating, a community room, an office, a kitchen, two bathrooms, and two storage areas. The assembly of the all steel Behlen building and concrete work has been contracted out to Treb Construction of Tipton. The concrete work has been sub-contracted to John Wrench of Beloit. The installation of the in-floor heating is being made by Energy Management Systems of Holcomb.
