Current Projects: Special focus to reduce water loss

The Kansas Rural Water Association provides targeted assistance to public water systems identified by the Kansas Water Office as having high unaccounted for (>30%) water loss. These systems are referred to as "Special Focus Projects." heck below for a brief report on the work by KRWA with the systems assigned to KRWA under the 2012 contract. Funding for this assistance is provided through the Clean Drinking Water Fee, and administered by the Kansas Water Office. This report is for the period April 1 - June 30, 2012.

Cherokee RWD 1

Cherokee RWD 1 has asked to be removed from the special focus list. The district repaired a leak on a 1.5 inch line that has been leaking into a mine shaft for years. Operator Brett Worstler advised the loss was now below 15% but the district no longer wishes to participate in the special focus program.

Cherokee RWD 4

The district repaired 11 leaks this quarter. KRWA Tech Eric Davolt and operator Fred Hiestand test customer meter this quarter they were found to be satisfactory. Unaccounted for water loss is: July - Sept 2011 = 27.4%, Oct - Dec 2011 = 43.1%, Jan - Mar 2012 = 50.6%, Apr - June 2012 = 38.2%.

City of Baxter Springs

The city of Baxter Springs repaired an average of 24 leaks per month this quarter. City personnel are installing the new meters. Unaccounted for water loss is: July - Sept 2011 = 35%, Oct - Dec 2011 = 43.1%, Jan - Mar 2012 = 45.5%, Apr - June 2012 = 38.4%.

City of De Soto

KRWA has conducted a water loss survey for the City of De Soto. KRWA tech Gary Armentrout has located 17 leaks for the city by the end of June. However as of July 9, the city has not repaired these leaks. KRWA also tested the well meters; two of the three tested are over-registering. The city needs to repair the leaks located and replace or repair the well meters. Unaccounted for water loss is: July - Sept 2011 = 47.5%, Oct - Dec 2011 = 45.4%, Jan - Mar 2012 = 32.8%, Apr - May 2012 = 26.2%. June information was not complete as of July 9, 2012.

City of Jennings

The city of Jennings reported there were no leaks this quarter. KRWA will assist with installing a meter on the line from the wells to town. This meter will be used to monitor the usage to town. Unaccounted for water loss is: July - Sept 2011 = 14.4%, Oct - Dec 2011 = 34.9%, Jan - Mar 2012 = 47.7%, Apr - June 2012 = 25.2%.

City of Kirwin

The City of Kirwin Operator Harold Holsman reported repairing one leak this quater on a two inch line. Harold is supposed to contact the fire department to see if he can get a more accurate amount of water used by the department. Harold reported water use for the fire department at 2000 gallons a month. KRWA tech Greg Metz suggested Harold contact the fire chief and have him report monthly the amount of water used by the department. Unaccounted for water loss is: July - Sept 2011 = 13.2%; Oct - Dec 2011 = 31.4%; Jan-March 2012 = 22.4%, April - June = 33.9%

City of Kismet

The city of Kismet reported repairing three leaks on service lines which were identified during a water loss survey by KRWA. Unaccounted for water loss is: July - Sept 2011 = 31.3%, Oct - Dec 2011 = 34.7%, Jan - Mar 2012 = 39.7%, Apr - June 2012 = 33.4%.

City of Nickerson

The city of Nickerson is installing a new meter at the city park. The city also repaired one leak on Edgemore street. Unaccounted for water loss is: July - Sept 2011 = 28.7%, Oct - Dec 2011 = 31%, Jan - Mar 2012 - 24.7%, Apr - May 2012 = 26.9%. June information was not available.

City of Park

The city of Park and KRWA conducted a partial contact survey to try to locate leaks. KRWA will conduct further surveys in July. Unaccounted for water loss is: July - Sept 2011 = 43.2%, Oct - Dec 2011 = no information provided, Jan - Mar 2012 = 70%, Apr - June 2012 = 51%.

City of Smith Center

City of Smith Center operator Dale Pickle reported repairing two water main breaks this quarter. Dale has been given approval to continue with replacement of fire hydrants that are leaking. The city just finished with a major line replacement project due to needing to relocate the line for co-op expansion. KRWA Tech Greg Metz and Dale heve discussed the water plant operation and suspect that a small amount of loss is because of evaporation at the settling basin. Dale is going to keep track of the water from the clear well verses the wells. KRWA will test the meter at the clearwell. Greg and Dale visited about waiting to do the meter test until the new plant is completed. Unaccounted for water loss is: July - Sept 2011 = 22.7%, Oct - Dec = 17.1%, January - March 2012 = 22.9%, April - May 2012 = 19.8%,

Dickinson RWD 1

Dickinson RWD 1 staff members James Canfield and Adrianne Feeney report fixing many leaks within the system this quarter. Almost all of the leaks were at glue joints. The district is considering line replacement in the areas where most of the leaks occur. The district is also in the process of applying for funding to replace all meters with an AMR metering system. The board considered a grant/loan for application to replace several miles of line but now is considering funding the line replacement with intermal funds. Unaccounted for water loss is: July - Sept 2011 = 17.2%, Oct - Dec 2011 = 41.5%, Jan - March 2012 = 53.6%, April - June = 33.2%.

Greenwood RWD 1

Greenwood RWD 1 continues to to repair leaks as soon as they are located. Operator Dan Montgomery reviews the system as much as possible looking for leaks. Seven leaks were located in May and four were locatedin June. Dan has also been busy with other improvements the district is making. Unaccounted for water loss is: July - Sept 2011 = 39%, Sept - Dec 2011 = 43.2%, Jan - March 2012 = 58.1%, Apr - May 2012 = 47.1%. June information was not available.

Harper RWD 4

Harper RWD 4 repaired one leak in May. KRWA will continue to offer assistance with leak detection. Unaccounted for water loss is: July - Sept 2011 = 16.6%, Oct - Dec 2011 = 37%, Jan - Mar 2012 = 18%, Apr - May 2012 = 42.5%, June information was not available.

Jefferson RWD 2

Jefferson RWD 2 operator Charlie Bowen has begun replacing meters that have recorded more than 1 million gallons. The district has also changed the meter reading schedule to ensure the master meter and customer meters are read as close together as possible. KRWA tech Tony Kimmi will be testing the master meter to ensure accuracy. Unaccounted for water loss is: July - Sept 2011 = 22.6%, Oct - Dec 2011 = 26%, Jan - Mar 2012 = 30.7%, Apr - June 2012 = 22.2%.

Kingman RWD 1

Kingman RWD 1 replaced ten meters in April 2012. There were no leaks repaired this quarter. Unaccounted for water loss is: July - Sept 2011 = 18.2%, Oct - Dec 2011 = 29.5%, Jan - Mar 2012 = 34.1%, Apr - June 2012 = 28.2%.

Neosho RWD 5

Neosho RWD 5 patrons have voted to be merged into Neosho RWD 4. KRWA requests this district be removed from the Special Focus listing.

Neosho RWD 9

Neosho RWD 9 operator Bob Knapp and KRWA Tech Eric Davolt conducted a leak detection survey of the disrtict and located one leak; that leak was estimated at 2 gpm. Unaccounted for water loss is: July - Sept 2011 = 20.7%, Oct - Dec 2011 = 26%, Jan - Mar 2012 = 29.1%, Apr - May 2012 = 29.1%. June information was not available.

Pottawatomie RWD 2

Pottawatomie RWD 2 operator Lynn Webster and KRWA Tech Greg Metz tested the well meter and the booster pump station meter this quarter. Greg and Lynn also located and repaired two more smaller leaks in creek crossings. The water loss for the district is showing improvement so far for this quarter. Unaccounted for water loss is: July -Sept 2011= 18.8%; Oct - Dec = 30.8%; Jan - March = 32.9%; April - May = 16.1%. June information was unavailable.

Sumner RWD 4

Sumner RWD 4 located and repaired five leaks this quarter. Total daily water pumped has reduced from 136,000 gallons per day to 102,000 per day. Unaccounted for water loss is: July - Sept 2011 = 24.5%, Oct - Dec 2011 = 41.1%, Jan - Mar 2012 = 61.8%, Apr - May 2012 = 50.3%. June information was not available.
