City of Haven Water Project Selected For USDA Rural Development American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Funding

6/30/2010 Financial, State Government

Topeka,  June 30, 2010 — USDA Rural Development State Director Patty Clark congratulated the City of Haven who may receive $4,907,000 for a critical water and environmental project, recently announced by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.  The Kansas water project has been selected by USDA Rural Development to be funded by federal appropriations, provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. (Stimulus Funds)

The City of Haven has been selected to receive a loan of $3,435,000 and a grant of $1,472,000 for replacement and/or rehabilitation of several components of the water supply, storage system, and treatment of the water.  Funding of the recipient is contingent upon their meeting the terms of the loan and grant agreements, and the letter of conditions.

The project will install a treatment plant to remove nitrates and provide disinfection to the drinking water; rehabilitate all four existing well house buildings and pumps; install a new elevated storage tank; install 3.2 miles of distribution system; dismantle the existing elevated water storage tower; purchase a generator for an emergency back-up power source; and install isolation valves throughout the distribution system.

State Director Clark commented, “USDA Rural Development’s Water and Environmental Program is one of the most important community and economic development efforts the Agency undertakes for rural Kansas.  These federal USDA funds, combined with the Agency’s technical assistance which supports local leadership, helps make these critically needed services a reality.  Without these federal funds, rural Kansas communities would find it difficult to keep pace with their basic need to have access to safe and reliable water sources.  Additionally, this valuable USDA program promotes economic growth and enhances the quality of life for the area residents served by these projects and all of Kansas.”

USDA Rural Development’s Water and Environmental Program provides loans and grants to ensure that the necessary investments are made in water and wastewater infrastructure to deliver safe drinking water and protect the environment in rural areas.
